I moved to Chicago about five years ago from my home state of Michigan. Living in the Detroit area, I’ve had a favorable relationship with the auto industry for most of my life. That is until about a dozen years ago when it was fairly obvious to both myself, as well as many of my fellow ex-Michigan “Slackers”, to get out of dodge. Well, the state of Michigan is now hoping that we’ll vacation there and you know what, it’s pretty hard not to after seeing these ads. There’s something about the piano music, Tim Allen’s voice and the soft lighting of Michigan’s coastline’s that makes me a big softy. It’s Pure Michigan.

Nice post!
As a Chicago ex-pat (living in Austin) with family who’ve called SW Michigan home since the 80′s, this ad reminds me of summers spent along lake Michigan and at scout camp near the Manistee National Forest. It’s an amazing state with so much to offer.
Just this morning I heard a piece on NPR about Detroit:

I heard a lot about this on NPR this morning actually. The new industries that are hoping to change the stereotype of the Motor City for the last 70 years. It’s time to diversify!
I, too, am an ex-pat of Detroit. I really do miss having the entire glory of the lower peninsula as a playground in the summer months. WE have property in mid-Michigan and my grandparents bought property up there. I miss it, though Wisconsin is a close second for my outdoor fix.
I really hope and wish Michigan will get back on its feet and soon.
