In school I fell in love with the idea of making type move and do more than communicate with language — I wanted it seen treated with a certain amount of respect. The diligence of choosing the right font. I find it fascinating that a typeface has a voice. It can say, “I’m easy to read in a novel” or “I’m young, hip” or “I’m accessible and friendly.” David Carson would say that spelling out “hot” should look hot, not just say hot.

But for a select number of designers, myself and others in my midst included, we are ga-ga for photogrammetry (the word!) or what some of us refer to as motion graphics. You might not know the word, but you know what I’m talking about. The opening sequence to Panic Room. The opening sequence of Stranger than Fiction. It’s starting to get popular, but it’s far from a new concept. What is new is bringing it to life in film.
