I subscribe to a ListServ for the Chicago Critical Mass and I saw this post yesterday. And it got me thinking about how we, as individuals, spark creativity and come up with great ideas.

This is an excerpt from the posting:

One of my favorite musicians, Andrew Bird, is keeping a blog about the process of creating an album. I found this paragraph particularly insightful. The bike bit just sweetened the pot.

“I’ve spent most of the last year inside a tour bus. I’ve spoken more words to journalists than I have to my friends and family. All of this has kept me from what I realize now is my job, and that’s to daydream. Now I bring my bike on tour and ride every day. Wandering in an unfamiliar town, the rhythm of walking or riding and a few hours to kill is nearly the perfect recipe for a new idea.”

Perhaps this is the Heron he purchased at Boulevard Bikes.

That’s all he really wrote on that particular subject, but the whole text is here:

I completely agree. Ideas pop in unstructured moments. That’s why it’s important for adults (and children) to have unbounded play and dream time. Traveling also helps you find your own rhythm again and free your ideas.
