Visible from our 30th floor aerie, looking east out of the lunchroom, is the rising column (now at the 24th floor) of what, when completed in 2010, will be one of Chicago’s most remarkable buildings and the tallest building in the world designed by a female architect—the Aqua Tower.

The vision of Jeanne Gang, of Studio Gang Architects, the structure was profiled (and lauded) in Sunday’s Chicago Tribune by architecture critic Blair Kamin, never an easy customer when it comes to architecture in our fair city. We’re already starting to see the irregularly shaped balconies emerge from the sides of the building; look at the architect’s rendering above to see how these balconies will make the building seemingly undulate as you gaze up to the 80th floor.

This is yet one more building that will further block our view of the lake, but to tell you the truth, I don’t mind. This is one edifice I’d trade a lake view for!

I agree, it will be lovely to look at. Too bad it will not be as visible as the “Spire” on the lake front. This design is far more interesting than the bland Trump Tower and that pointy twisted nail thing. Huge Yuck.

You’re right Gary–while it might not be the most attractive building going up, the artist’s rendering is indeed more visually appealing. I shall reserve judgment until construction is complete! :)
